UK-India Free Trade Agreement opens new opportunities for exporters.
The UK-India Free Trade Agreement has officially come into force, creating new opportunities for UK businesses looking to expand into one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.
However, exporters are being reminded that accessing preferential tariffs depends on having the correct customs processes and origin documentation in place.
UK producers and exporters looking to benefit from reduced tariffs must be registered with HMRC before completing origin declarations. Without the correct registration, declarations could be rejected, meaning Indian customers may not be able to access the tariff benefits available under the agreement.
Before quoting for new business, shipping goods or promising potential savings, exporters should check that:
- Their goods meet UK origin requirements
- The correct evidence is available to support the origin claim
- Their HMRC registration is complete
- Their Indian customers understand the documentation they will receive
Businesses exporting to India are encouraged to review their origin processes now and ensure they are ready to take advantage of the opportunities ahead.
